It is unique surgical specialty requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry. It encompasses the full range or Oral surgery including the extraction of teeth, the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, the placement of dental implants and the use of intravenous sedation. The maxillofacial training expands into the management of medical and surgical problems of the mouth jaws and face. This includes the treatment of cancers, salivary gland diseases, facial disproportion, facial pain, jaw joint disorders, cysts and tumours of the jaws, as well as numerous problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections.

They undergo additional training specialising in Oral Surgery in addition to dental school.
